Philip Leslie “Phil” Carpenter
Philip Leslie “Phil” Carpenter, 87, passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of his family on Monday, June 15, 2026.
Born on December 12, 1938, in Williamsport, he was a son of the late Walter Leslie and Iva Idella (Houser) Carpenter.
Phil was a hardworking and dedicated man who spent his life building both a career and lasting friendships throughout the community. He began his working years as a loom mechanic at the former Silk Mill and later worked as a sewing machine mechanic for Arrow Shirt Company and Weldon’s for many years before eventually going into business for himself.
Together with his beloved wife, Phil owned and operated the New Brass Rail and later Silly Philly’s and Silly Philly’s Too in Williamsport, where he became well known for his friendly personality and welcoming nature. Whether greeting longtime customers or meeting someone for the first time, Phil never knew a stranger and enjoyed spending time socializing with those who walked through the door.
In addition to his business ventures, Phil devoted 45 years of service to the Grit Newspaper in Williamsport.
Phil had many interests that brought him joy throughout his life. He was an avid collector of model cars and beer steins and had a special passion for model trains. His extensive train platform, proudly displayed throughout his living room, was admired by family and friends alike. A loyal Notre Dame football fan and New York Yankees supporter, Phil also grew to enjoy watching the Philadelphia Phillies over the years thanks to his wife’s enthusiasm for the team.
Above all else, Phil cherished his family and his greatest joy came from spending time with his grandchildren. Phil shared a special bond with his grandsons, William and Spencer who he enjoyed seeing everyday after school and sharing snacks with.
Surviving is his loving wife of 56 years, Patricia A. (Braster) Carpenter; five children, Steven Chamberlain (Omega) of Citrus Springs, FL, Debra Johnson of Camp Hill, Linda Russin (Simon) of Haverford, Philip E. Carpenter (Lydia) of Stevenson Ranch, CA, and Leslie Scott of Muncy; eight grandchildren, Daisy, Autumn, Derek (Michelle), Joe, Simon, Natalya, William and Spencer; and eight great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Carol Shirey.
A graveside service to honor Phil’s life will be held 2 p.m., Friday, June 26 at Green Lawn Memorial Park, 62 Route 54 Highway Montgomery.
