John Rodney "Rod" Pontious, 73, passed away peacefully at home on July 31, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family after a brief but courageous battle with cancer.
Born on November 28, 1952, in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, Rod was the son of the late Richard "Dick" and Isabelle Pontious. He spent his life in the area he loved and built a home filled with laughter, loyalty, and unwavering devotion to the people who meant the most to him.
On September 16, 1978, Rod married the love of his life, Diane. Their marriage of nearly 48 years was a beautiful example of partnership, commitment, and unconditional love. Anyone who knew Rod knew there was nothing more important to him than taking care of Diane. Whether it was through life's everyday moments or its greatest challenges, he was always by her side. His love for her was constant, quiet, and unmistakable.
Rod was a proud father to his son, Michael, and daughter-in-law, Lisa, and an incredibly proud grandfather to Emalie, Cassidy, and Joey. His family was the center of his world, and some of his happiest moments were simply spending time together, sharing stories, making memories, and making everyone laugh.
If there was one thing Rod could always do, it was make people smile. He had an incredible sense of humor, loved telling jokes, and had a way of turning an ordinary conversation into one filled with laughter. His quick wit and playful personality made him someone people naturally enjoyed being around. He believed life was better when people were smiling.
Rod found joy in the simple things that made life meaningful. He loved hunting and fishing, enjoyed cooking for family and friends, and rarely missed an opportunity to watch NFL football. He appreciated classic American muscle cars and was a lifelong member of the National Rifle Association. One of his favorite places on earth was the family cabin they affectionately called "the mountain." It was a place where he found peace, shared countless memories with those he loved, and felt most at home.
He also leaves behind his faithful dog, Tucker, who was never far from his side.
Rod is survived by his loving wife, Diane; his son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Lisa Pontious; his grandchildren, Emalie (Hugh), Cassidy (Mason) and Joey; his sister, Jean Hessert and her husband, Gary; his niece, Aimee and her husband, Doug; his nephew, Jake; along with many extended family members, friends, and neighbors who will forever remember his humor, generosity, and kind heart.
Although our hearts are broken, we find comfort in knowing that Rod's legacy lives on in the love he gave so freely, the laughter he inspired, and the countless lives he touched. He taught those around him that family comes first, that a good joke can brighten even the hardest day, and that the greatest measure of a life is not found in possessions, but in the people who are fortunate enough to have been loved by you.
He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever carried in the hearts of all who knew him.
A celebration of Rod's life will be held at a later date, where family and friends will gather to honor his memory, share stories, and celebrate a life so well lived.
