Nancy Matter passed away peacefully at the Williamsport Home on September 14, 2026. She was 81 years old.
She was born February 12, 1945, in Philadelphia, PA. She was the daughter of Pete and Elsie Nagurny. Her parents settled in the, then, small town of Cranbury, NJ where her father was the owner of the Cranbury Press as well as the police chief and the chief of the fire department. She attended Heightstown High School, graduating in 1963 and then attended Lycoming College where she graduated in 1967 with a double-major in art and social studies. Her senior year, she met her future husband, Charlie, and they were married December 23, 1967, 10 days before her new husband was leaving to serve in the Army.
She moved to Naples, FL in 1969 and lived with her parents who had settled there after retiring. At the time there was one bank and one traffic light in the town of Naples.
Their daughter, Jennifer, was born there on Memorial Day May 30, 1970. Upon her husband's return from Vietnam, they returned to Williamsport and began their new life together.
Their second child, Cristen, was born on March 7, 1973. Shortly after they bought a 32-acre farm with a big house, a barn, and a beautiful pond. In the cold winter months, the pond would freeze over and only after 8" had accumulated would she call all her friends for an ice-skating party. Everyone spent the day with their kids skating and keeping warm by the fire in the 55-gal drum next to the pond. Nancy would make soup, Sloppy Joe's, hot chocolate, and everyone would sit around the house after skating and enjoy each other's company. It was a special time when parents did simple things with their kids and Nancy enjoyed these times immensely.
She was a pretty good golfer, a prolific reader of mystery novels, and she truly enjoyed shopping on the internet. It was rumored in 2024 she was listed on the Top 5 Customers List for Amazon's Deliver Service to residential consumers.
Nancy was an extremely talented artist. She worked mainly with watercolors and acrylics and her attention to detail was amazing. She sold most of her work through catalogs and fly shopes around the United States. She especially enjoyed painting something and giving it to a friend. She would look at her work and say, "I think so and so would like this". She never asked for money, and her joy came from listening to the compliments she would receive.
And then there was her "famous bridge club". A collection of women she'd known forever and she loved them all. They played together for over 50 years, and they would meet every couple of weeks alternating homes that hosted the event. They would catch up on everyone's family, share gossip, and eventually even play some bridge. It was during these ongoing conversations that Nancy was truly Nancy. Her out of the blue, hilarious remarks concerning a specific occurrence had everyone in stitches. She loved this group of girls with all her heart as they represented lifelong friendship and mutual respect for one another.
She will always be remembered for her beauty, her smile, her vibrant personality, her comical remarks, and her sincere affection for all of her family and friends. She was the "real deal", a "class act" from top to bottom and she will be sorely missed by those who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her younger brother, Peter Naguurny, and younger sister, Terry Covey; her children, Jennifer Lundy and Cristen McGinness; her grandkids, Kathryn and Charlie Lundy, Stephanie Taylor, and Samantha McGinness.
The family will be holding a private celebration of life.
