Wayne Myers of Montoursville passed away on September 6, 2026. He was born in Lairdsville, the first of four children to Roland E. and Celia (Houseknecht) Myers, on September 27, 1929.
Wayne graduated from Sonestown High School in Sullivan County in 1947. Shortly after high school he enlisted in the US Army. Following basic training in Fort Dix, NJ he attended signal corps school before reporting to Frankfurt, Germany. There he worked as a cryptographer with the Army Security Agency decoding foreign messages, mostly from the Soviets. From that experience he would often recite the ASA mantra "In God we trust, all others we monitor" which he found particularly useful in raising his two children.
While in Frankfurt he met a young German woman, Klara Reppenhagen, who would become his wife after his Army discharge as a sergeant in 1953. He often reminisced fondly about his time in Germany and the opportunities the Army afforded a country boy from Muncy Valley in Sullivan County to see the sights of various countries in Europe.
Upon his return to the U.S. in 1953 and as a newlywed, Wayne enrolled in Lycoming College on the GI bill, graduating in 1957 with a major in German. Between his years stationed in Germany, his college studies, and having a pretty good tutor at home until 1976, he became fluent in the German language. He always enjoyed opportunities to put his German proficiency to use and did so through his last days.
Upon graduation from Lycoming, Wayne went to work for Sprout Waldron in Muncy in the international sales area. He eventually experienced frequent international travel and once again marveled at the opportunities he was provided to visit so many countries around the globe. He spent his entire professional career working for Sprout Waldron and its corporate successors. Upon retirement he became a Freemason, always carried his American Legion membership card with pride, and was a volunteer fixture at the Little League World Series for many years. He loved to tinker with mechanics and took a part-time job with Lowe's in the tool department to utilize those skills and interact with people, as he always enjoyed meeting new friends.
Wayne had a passion for cars and was quite impulsive when it came to owning a new and different sports car. At age 92 he purchased the last of his toys, an Audi TT which he quickly realized was a bit too much for him to enter and exit. He also owned various motor scooters over the years eventually transitioning to a trike in his late 80's. He was often seen motoring around the area of his second home in Florida as well as around his primary residence in Montoursville. Wayne loved old style country music, Rummikub, good food, and a couple of beers every day, right up to the end. He often said that there are no bad beers, just some better than others. He also loved a bargain but was often challenged in conducting a cost benefit analysis, when it was necessary to travel a distance to take advantage of that "bargain".
Wayne is survived by his son, Michael Myers (Sherri) of New Smyrna Beach Florida; daughter, Susan (Myers) Martz of Hartland, Wisconsin; four grandchildren and one great grandchild.
The family will receive visitors from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday September 15 at the McCarty Thomas Funeral Home at 733 Broad Street in Montoursville. There will be a brief service following visitation. The family invites all friends to join in a catered celebration of life immediately following the service at the family vacation home Creekside Manor. Wayne's family hopes everyone will consider stopping by. Burial will take place at the Montoursville Cemetery in a private family ceremony. The family thanks the staff at Celebration Villa for the fine care and attention he received during his stay there.
