Ronald J. Bergen, 88, passed away at home on September 13, 2026.
He was born in Punxsutawney, PA, on April 24, 1938, a son to the late James and Eloise (Engler) Bergen. He was most recently a resident of Loyalsock Township, but previously lived in Cogan Station for 48 years.
Ron graduated St. Mary's High School class of 1956 and enlisted in the Marine Corps while a senior in high school and was honorably discharged as an E-5 in 1962. He attended St. Francis College in Loretto, PA and Lycoming College in Williamsport before joining the staff of the Sun-Gazette as a display advertising representative in 1958, where he was employed for nearly 40 years. He then worked for the Nestle Company where he retired in 2002. Ron was a Catholic.
He married Louise McLaughlin on September 15, 1962, and would have celebrated their 64th anniversary this year. In addition to his wife Louise, he is survived by their 2 children, Joseph R. (Jennifer) Bergen of Williamsport and Marybeth (Brian) Bergen-Gallagher of Sweet Valley; two grandsons, Thomas (Regina) Wurster of Hoboken, NJ, and Andrew Wurster of Shavertown PA; as well as great-grandson Benjamin. He enjoyed hearing his grandsons call him "Apah," a name that they started when they were little.
Ron loved the outdoors, hunting, guns, shooting and especially his hunting camp, "One Shot" in Grays Run, Lewis Township. He enjoyed long range shooting and Silhouette Shooting at Lycoming County Sportsmen's. He won the AA State Silhouette Championship at Ridgeway PA in 1985. A Life/Endowment member of the National Rifle Association, Ron loved teaching young folks about gun handling and safety. Ron was also a blood donor with the American Red Cross for many years. He owned dogs throughout his life, having a special love for German Shepherds.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by grandparents, Joseph and Mary Engler.
A private memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at One Shot at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Doctors Without Borders, MÈdecins Sans Frontiers, P.O. Box 5022, Hagerstown, MD 21741-9804.
