E. Eleanor (Ellie) English

It is with great sorrow that the family of E. Eleanor (Ellie) English announces her peaceful passing from this life into the presence of her Heavenly Father on September 5, 2026, while surrounded by her loving family.

She was born in Williamsport on September 30, 1936, to German immigrants Peter and Clara Weihermuller. She was a graduate of Montoursville High School, Class of 1954. She was baptized and confirmed as a Lutheran, where she taught Sunday school for 25 years. Later in life, she joined the Montoursville Presbyterian Church, where she proudly served as an Elder and on countless committees.

Ellie worked several secretarial jobs throughout her lifetime, including positions at Penn College and the Montoursville School District, before becoming a residential advisor for Providence House. This was a special place to her and a job that was near to her heart. During this time, she poured her heart into all of the girls who walked through its doors.

She was a classy, strong, energetic, and spiritual woman. Her favorite things were crafting, sewing, listening to classical music, playing the piano, singing, and studying Scripture. She was an extraordinary cook and never missed an opportunity to host a holiday party or family gathering.

All of her spare time was spent with her precious grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom she taught about Jesus, prayer, and songs. Ellie would proudly state that she rocked and sang to all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren throughout the years. Each one of them called her Nanny, and she will always be known for making the best German pancakes!

She leaves behind a daughter, Valerie (Cain) Shank. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Melissa (Chris) Ocker, Alexandra (Chad) Warren, Zachary Fortin, Meghan Crist, Olivia (Brennan) Cioffi, Austin Shank, Autumn Shank, Gabriel (Alyssa) Fortin, and Sage Diana, as well as 16 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings Margaret Emery, Clara May Hoff, and Daniel Weihermuller.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, James R. English; four daughters, Robin (Cain) Holtzman, Vickie (Cain) Diana, Amy English, and Rebeka English; one grandson, J. Mathew Cain; and her parents, Peter and Clara Weihermuller.

Ellie, or Nanny, as she was known to so many, will be missed tremendously. She left a lasting imprint on countless lives and was a true matriarch of a strong family. Her life, the lessons she taught about Jesus, her kindness, and her cooking will never be forgotten.

A Celebration of Life will be held on November 7 at 2 p.m. at the Montoursville Presbyterian Church. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family.
