Today we count — it’s time to fill out decennial census
Today we count.
Today our numbers matter.
Today is the day of the decennial census of America’s population.
Every state and community depends on an accurate population count. Figures that come from the Census are used in calculating the distribution of government resources to states.
For many people, this will be a simple task that may be accomplished in three different ways. Fill out a form and return it. Go online and complete the assignment. Place a call — 844-330-2020 is the number to fill out the census by telephone — and answer the questions. This is the first time that all three of these options are available.
Too busy, you say? Consider this: Every person who is not counted costs the state $20,930 in federal funds, according to U.S. Sen. Robert Casey, D-Scranton.
And too often, under-served communities suffer even more because their populations are missed in the count. That leads to a large disparity in the allocation of resources.
It would be unfortunate, too, for the count to be overshadowed by the ongoing national public health crisis, for our nation to be so distracted that we neglect this matter of great importance. Officials should examine closely the result of today’s count and consider any sort of impact stemming from the coronavirus.
The numbers will impact all of us for the next 10 years. We need them to be accurate. And we need them to be complete. So do not delay. Fill out your census questionnaire today.
