PIAA made correct call for fall sports
Students returned to the playing fields on Monday, three days after the PIAA board voted to allow fall sports.
This is a positive sign, in our view, and we hope Gov. Wolf stays true to his word that he will not turn his “recommendation” that a return to the playing field should be delayed until next year into a mandate.
In agreeing to a return to play, the PIAA board placed responsibility for safety to the hands of individual school boards.
“As the health and safety of students is paramount in moving forward with athletics, the board believes that through each member school’s adherence to their developed school health and safety plans and the PIAA Return to Competition guidelines,” the PIAA said in a statement.
That’s the kicker — adherence to health and safety plans.
We have faith in our local school authorities that they will do the right thing when it comes to watching out for the welfare of local youths.
Now it will be up to athletes, coaches and staff, along with parents and fans to also do the right thing and adhere to all measures that are put in place to safeguard them and the local community.
