More should try to be as gracious as retiring judge

We congratulate Lycoming County Judge Marc Lovecchio, who recently retired from his position after 12 years on the bench.

Last Wednesday’s edition of the Williamsport Sun-Gazette gave Lovecchio a chance to reflect on his time as one of our county’s judges. He was gracious in praising the work of a long-time staff member, Rebecca Loner, and in praising the work of the probation department, of other judges and of Lycoming County’s District Attorney and Chief Public Defender.

He said District Attorney Ryan Gardner and Chief Public Defender Nicole Spring “care about doing the right thing.”

Our adversarial justice system is tasked with making difficult decision that have enormous impact on people’s lives. It is no surprise that their work often comes under scrutiny and with second-guessing from the public.

It is reassuring that we have people involved who care about doing the right thing and it is reassuring that we had a judge who could see and appreciate that in the people who make the court system work.

We thank you for that, Judge Lovecchio — or as he prefers to be called, Marc.
