"Right now, I'm focused on doing a good job for the people of Pennsylvania -- for the people who did elect me, and didn't elect me, and trying to make sure they have confidence in their judiciary."
Montoursville native and newly elected state Supreme Court Justice Kevin Brobson shared this words with the Sun-Gazette, as reported in Wednesday's edition.
They are the right words for us all to hear from a state Supreme Court justice. Too many in our political system, in all branches, seem to exclude the voters who considered an opposing candidate from their considerations of what it means to serve the public. Perhaps there would be greater confidence in the various entities and branches of government if more elected officials took that concept to heart.
But then, Brobson seems to have a background that keeps him grounded in what public service is -- and what public service entails. He credited that to his upbringing in Lycoming County -- he graduated from both Montoursville Area High School and Lycoming College -- and especially the influence of his family.
"He's a very, very hard worker. We instilled that in all our children," his mother, Pat Brobson, told the Sun-Gazette. "They were all good kids and hard workers."
The newly elected justice used the opportunity of his swearing-in and its subsequent coverage to share those values with future graduates of him alma mater, Montoursville Area High School.
"Everything is possible with hard work," Brobson said. "That's really what it comes down to. Hard work and faith."
We wish Justice Brobson well with his goals, which he said includes improving the accessibility of Pennsylvania's judicial system and dedicating the system toward fairness. We appreciate that he found last fall's campaign a worthwhile and educational endeavor, praising "the opportunity to connect with so many people," in his words.
And we appreciate his words to Montoursville's students, which are of value to all the students in Lycoming County and throughout Pennsylvania. If we all, student and non-student alike, heeded those words with diligence and patience, we could solve a lot of problems and rise above a lot of challenges.
"Everything is possible with hard work."
