We hope Shop-Vac has success in finding 25 more employees to join their workforce.
But then, we hope all of our employers -- in manufacturing, in administrative offices, in the halls of our prison and 911 call center and in our schools -- have greater success in filling their vacancies.
For years, we've heard -- and agreed with -- calls for more manufacturing to be done on our shores and specifically here in Lycoming County. We've heard -- and agreed with -- the principle that our region needs a diverse selection of jobs to propel our economy and contribute to a thriving region.
Now, with Shop-Vac returning, and Digger Industries under construction on Route 15 and many other industrial sites looking to grow, we need to address the other side of the equation.
Lycoming County needs workers.
We need our leaders -- in county and municipal government, in civic and business groups and beyond the rooms and meetings of both -- to develop a plan to attract workers and families to Lycoming County.
Our county has a lot to offer: Home prices, rental rates and tax burdens considerably below many states in the Northeast. A city with impressive outdoors recreation a short drive away yet the amenities, such as a symphony, theater groups, art galleries and a variety of great restaurants, often found only in significantly larger cities right here. The flexibility in their children's educational opportunities that eight school districts offer, along with a variety of youth groups, churches and civic groups to nourish well-rounded families.
What we need are cohesive plans by our leaders to promote these assets to Lycoming County's workers of tomorrow.
