Gov. Josh Shapiro should be commended for recognizing that job creation is a top priority for his office.
The Shapiro administration worked with business leaders at Prysmian Group North America, Mayor Derek Slaughter and the Williamsport-Lycoming Chamber of Commerce to secure state funding for an expansion at Prysmian's Williamsport plant. That expansion will create at least 27 new jobs and help preserve 407 jobs throughout the state.
"We are planting a flag here in Pennsylvania -- our commonwealth is open for business and we are going to be a leader in innovation, economic development and job creation," Shapiro said, according to the Sun-Gazette's reporting in Thursday's edition.
"Prysmian contributes significantly to our local economy with family-sustaining jobs," Slaughter said.
It is the right attitude for our governor, mayor and all elected officials in Pennsylvania to have. It's an attitude for which we have praised Shapiro for having before -- as we editorialized on April 18 concerning expansion of manufacturing in Schuylkill County, an economy in which jobs are plentiful and diverse is pivotal to ensuring prosperity for American families.
We editorialized on that day that we hoped, as we believe all of our readers hopes, that more positive developments would come. We frankly didn't expect another sign of progress this quickly and this close to home.
We are thankful the Shapiro administration and local leaders surpassed those expectations and we continue to hope our region's and our state's economies reach the heights of which we believe they are capable.
