New boat launch a blessing
We are confident the new boat launch under construction in Muncy Creek Township will be an asset to our region.
The economic impact of outdoors recreation simply cannot be overstated: Canoeing, kayaking and fishing bring visitors and tourism dollars to our county. These recreational activities introduce our region to people from throughout the Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic states, if not the United States as a whole. Boating, hunting and hiking leave a positive impression on thousands of Americans who may, if not now then one day, perhaps decide where to open a business or start a family.
We also appreciate that the boat launch will be named for the late Garth Everett, who was instrumental in the early stages of replacing the boat launch and, more broadly, served the region as a lawmaker and public servant for years.
Everett understood the value of outdoors recreation and the importance of balancing preservation of nature with safely developing energy to benefit Lycoming County and Pennsylvania — to benefit our labor market and our homes and businesses and their need for affordable heating and electricity.
“Garth worked on this project up to his retirement and continued even in retirement,” state Rep. Joe Hamm, R-Hepburn Township, said in a report in Wednesday’s edition of the Sun-Gazette.
His efforts, and the efforts of all our local leaders in eastern Lycoming County, are appreciated and we believe the boat launch will be both a fitting tribute to Garth Everett’s legacy and a useful site to encourage fishing and boating for decades to come.
