Our region's intermediate unit, a collaborative office that serves schools in Lycoming, Tioga and other surrounding counties, recently continued a project worthy of praise.
The EmployAbility Day helps students with disabilities learn about jobs and careers through job shadowing.
"Some businesses will even allow them to do hands-on things," Jeffrey Pelly, a staff member with the unit who helped organize the event, which the Sun-Gazette featured in last Wednesday's edition. "For example, if it's a kitchen, maybe they can do some prep work or something like that."
The program usually focuses on juniors and seniors in the region's high schools. During the peak of COVID-19, the program had to be mostly postponed. Organizers are happy with its resurrection and the opportunity to, once again, show young people that, in Pelly's words, "everybody has a place to fit in."
We appreciate the efforts of Intermediate Unit 17 to address an important issue -- accommodating and encouraging young people to enter the workforce and helping employers understand how employees with disabilities can contribute to their successes.
