The upcoming holiday is about more than one man, as important to history and the progress of American society as he was.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is about a movement and about a moment in history. It's about America's pursuit of a more perfect union.
Segregation and discrimination were obstacles to the U.S. being that more perfect union. They were, philosophically and in practice, anti-American.
America's democratic capitalism can only succeed if it affords everyone opportunities for success. It can only motivate and inspire future generations if merit and hard work guide its rewards -- not immutable and irrelevant characteristics. Otherwise it becomes a sour mythology.
While King was not alone in challenging the evils of that day and age and while we steadfastly believe our schools should teach our youth about James Baldwin, Bayard Rustin, Ida B. Wells and many others, King's leadership and sacrifices were pivotal to the successes of the civil rights movement.
The STEP Americorps Peace Walk to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day will start at the corner of Third and Market streets at noon Monday. It always provides an opportunity for members of our communities to show their support for the principles of equality and justice.

We hope our readers avail themselves of these numerous opportunities, learn more about the important contributions to our nation's history made by King and others and reflect on the progress made and the progress that still needs to be made.
"It really means remembering and recognizing the work that Dr. King did," Carrie Bruning of STEP Americorps told the Sun-Gazette, "and then continuing to carry that on."
Monday -- and the week that follows -- is an important opportunity to begin that reflection and that commitment to improvement.
