On Saturday, the Uptown Music Collective performed its "Decade of Grunge" concert at the Community Arts Center, once again demonstrating the program's commitment to offering youngsters in our region a well-rounded education in music.
Collective founder and executive director Dave Brumbaugh, in an article in Thursday's Sun-Gazette, described the grunge sub-genre as a "less flamboyant brand of rock that I felt focused more on the song and emotional expression."
Other concerts by the collective have centered on blues, rock from the 1970s, soul and other genres. But the education offered by the program goes well beyond different genres of contemporary music.
As the Sun-Gazette noted in Thursday's article, the program also instructs youngsters in how to work as stage technicians and spotlight operators.
Of course, the concerts produced by the collective offer audiences a chance to enjoy a wide variety of music -- which itself is a nice benefit to our communities.
But the program's contributions to the region are at their most noteworthy in what it offers in educating young people. The Williamsport Sun-Gazette, as one of the sponsors of the Uptown Music Collective, appreciates the hard work and effort by the leaders and staff of this program to offer a venue for exploring music and stagecraft.
