Resist election-related fraud efforts — and charge offenders

2 min read

Lycoming County Voter Services is warning the public that attempts to defraud county residents out of the type of information that can be used to commit identity theft are shifting to the upcoming election, as was reported in Friday's edition of the Williamsport Sun-Gazette.

We agree with our county's officials in discouraging anyone from providing a caller, email or text with personal identifying or financial information. Vigilance is the first step at mitigating the harm these dishonest thieves can inflict on our communities.

We hope authorities at all levels of government -- law enforcement at the municipal, state and federal levels -- are successful in investigating, prosecuting and punishing these criminals.

Their efforts, no matter the cover story they use to steal, victimize our neighbors and family members. They can erode the financial security of households, causing cruel stress and unfair worry for our loved ones.

Connecting the dishonesty and theft to our election processes -- which in recent years have suffered from misinformation, disinformation and attacks on the hard work of volunteers and elections officials throughout our communities, state and nation -- is no less odious than the other scams and lies these predators rely upon.

We hope everyone is cautious and resists the attempts at theft. We hope our judicial system adequately punishes those who prey on American voters with lies and larceny.
