Firefighters take service across state

We doubt that the Williamsport Sun-Gazette can thank our communities’ firefighters and first responders too often.

An article in our Nov. 8 edition reminded us of that truth. Eight volunteer firefighters from our region went to the Lehigh Valley recently to assist in efforts to contain and extinguish a wildfire.

The firefighters shared details of the complex, demanding work they joined in — the challenges the terrain offered and the homes they helped save.

These firefighters keep our communities — and in this case, communities about 115 miles away — out of sense of public service.

“We are self-funded and rely on donations and fundraising we can do,” Porter Kling, a fire warden with the Tiadaghton Forest Firefighters Association, told a Sun-Gazette reporter.

“We need the community support,” Jeff Markley, a fellow fire warden, said.

It’s, as we said about a similar trip in 2018, “a work detail few of us could handle. We honor those who sign up to do such a job, protecting homes, families and property, all the while at considerable danger to themselves.”

We hope our communities truly listen to their stories and to their request for support. Our volunteer firefighters provide an integral services for our region and our state. As we have noted before, the communities of our region should always strive to improve in how we support their selfless efforts.
