We hope ‘Most Wanted’ guide helps address crime

Last weekend, the Williamsport Sun-Gazette was proud to resurrect one of our most popular features — the “Most Wanted” section.

The guide shares details concerning people in our communities who have outstanding warrants, including photos. Our website will continue to be updated as defendants are located or turn themselves in.

“The public’s response to previous publications of Lycoming County’s ‘Most Wanted’ was tremendous,” Lycoming County District Attorney Tom Marino wrote in an introductory letter to begin the guide. “As a result of your efforts, over 100 fugitives were located, apprehended and brought to justice. … Thank you again for joining in the fight against fugitives in Lycoming County. Working together we can maintain the safety and quality of life in Lycoming County we have come to expect and deserve.”

We appreciate the opportunity to help law enforcement locate these defendants. We understand that our friends, family and neighbors have concerns about crime and safety. We respect what our police, prosecutors and others who work in criminal justice do to alleviate such concerns — too often thankless work and too often while facing a degree of scrutiny and criticism that many professionals would find frustrating.

We hope, both in regards to our “Most Wanted” guide and more generally throughout the days and weeks ahead, that the members of our community can do their part: Cooperate with police as they investigate crimes and provide whatever information can be helpful to remove dangerous criminals from our streets.

If you are fortunate enough to not be in a situation where you would have knowledge that could assist an investigation, thank your community’s police — not in a figurative, back-of-your-mind way, but clearly and deliberately thank your neighbors and friends in law enforcement.

Their dedication and hard work is a large part of why your family has such good fortune.

Starting at $2.99/week.
