Police right about responsibility

An article in Saturday’s Sun-Gazette brings a timely reminder as people across the region ramp up their summer fun.
“We want people to be responsible and make the right choices,” Lycoming Regional Police Department Chief Christopher Kriner said.
Responsibility, as police officers noted in the article, means many things.
It means to never drive or operate a boat while impaired — always have a designated driver or, when operating watercraft, someone who can operate the boat safely without consuming alcohol.
It means wearing life jackets when boating, and checking weather forecasts ahead of boating to be more confident that conditions will be appropriate.
It means taking safety courses for operating watercraft, so that you are best equipped to provide a safe experience for yourself and for passengers.
We appreciate that Chief Kriner and law enforcement shared these reminders ahead of the Fourth of July weekend — a busy time for festivities.
But we must acknowledge that these words of wisdom have no expiration date: Safety will still matter in late July and August, and in the other 10 months of the year.
We hope the public takes this reminder to heart, and makes responsible choices throughout the summer and throughout the year.
