Safety vital while trick-or-treating

As October draws to a close, Halloween arrives.

The American Red Cross offers some tips for safe trick-or-treating on the organization’s website.

The Red Cross recommends using face makeup instead of masks, which make seeing difficult, giving trick-or-treaters a flashlight to light their way, adding reflective tape to costumes and trick-or-treat bags and having everyone wear light-colored clothing.

“Make sure adults know where the kids are going,” the Red Cross further advises. “A parent or responsible adult should accompany young children door-to-door. Only visit homes that have a porch light on. Accept treats at the door – never go inside.”

Trick-or-treaters should only walk on sidewalks, not in the street. If no sidewalk is available, youngsters should walk at the edge of the roadway, facing traffic.

“Look both ways before crossing the street, and cross only at the corner,” the Red Cross says. “Don’t cut across yards or use alleys. Don’t cross between parked cars.”

Of course, we also urge motorists to be mindful on Friday night and throughout the weekend.

There will be more children along our streets as the nights get darker. And the children may be excited and distracted. Cautious driving can help our communities and neighborhoods avoid tragedies.

We hope everyone can enjoy the fun and excitement of the holiday — and we hope everyone can enjoy Halloween safely.
