Candidate right to call out aversion to transparency

Stacy Garrity, state treasurer and presumptive Republican nominee for governor, recently held a campaign stop in Harrisburg focused on one specific incident from the Shapiro administration: The use of non-disclosure agreements and a settlement to cover up a staffer’s sexual harassment of a co-worker.

Garrity and her Republican supporters are right to turn the public’s attention to, as she put it, “the lack of accountability Josh Shapiro has delivered, the lack of transparency Josh Shapiro has offered, and the trust that Josh Shapiro has eroded.”

As the Sun-Gazette noted in an editorial about a year ago, “Gov. Josh Shapiro continues to shroud his conduct — the business of taxpaying Pennsylvanians — in an unacceptable level of secrecy.” We warned our communities in June of 2023 that the Shapiro administration was “moving toward less transparency and accountability.”

Many of our editorials on Shapiro’s lack of transparency have noted his resistance to disclosing gifts and perks from organizations that in turn request state funding, his office’s reluctance to share his daily calendar and other instances.

All of these instances are important — none are as important as accountability for instances of a man abusing his position within a governor’s administration to harass co-workers.

We hope Garrity’s campaign continues to highlight the importance of transparency and accountability — and of our incumbent governor’s well-documented shortcomings in being transparent.
