Congressman’s efforts on banking insurance appreciated

We applaud U.S. Rep. Dan Meuser’s efforts to adjust the perimeters for Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. coverage of Americans’ bank deposits.

Regardless of the sources and contributing factors — and we suspect both the far left’s scapegoating of “greedy corporations” and the far right’s insistance that “government spending” was the primary culprit are largely wrong — the impact of inflation and rising costs of living deserved careful, detail-oriented responses by our elected officials.

We’ve, in fact, repeatedly called on officials in both Washington and Harrisburg to demonstrate greater mindfulness of the burden rising expenses were placing on American families. Under President Joe Biden’s administration, the calls were unheeded — a negligence, we suspect, played a major role in Democrats losing the White House in 2024.

The efforts by Meuser, a Republican from Dallas in Luzerne County, will help catch a critical safety net up to the times. FDIC insurance offers families and businesses alike a greater ability to trust our banking system — which in turn keeps money in circulation, allowing lenders the capital to support loans to start-ups and existing businesses necessary to create jobs and meet Americans’ needs.

Our economy — and with it, the day-to-day lives of our neighbors, co-workers, family and friends — were strained by inflation. We hope Meuser’s efforts to readjust our institutions to reflect this reality will serve as a model for other lawmakers who say they want to help America’s middle-class families with their struggles.
