Approach to juvenile crime needs to be multi-faceted

We hope our police bureau’s efforts at addressing juvenile crime are a success.

“Juveniles who engage in criminal activity will be held accountable and may face criminal charges, police noted,” an article in Tuesday’s edition reported. “Parents and guardians may also face legal consequences when warranted. Additionally, parents and guardians should be aware that they may be civilly liable for injuries or property damage caused by their children, police said.”

We concur that when crimes are committed, it is imperative that police and prosecutors are able to pursue the appropriate charges and, upon conviction, the appropriate sentences.

We appreciate the bureau’s acknowledgement that confronting juvenile crime requires a multi-faceted approach and that police and local leaders continue to work on identifying new aspects and initiatives that can work side-by-side with the methods already used.

As we have editorialized before, a sense of accountability or responsibility are integral parts of our community addressing this topic.

Too often, community members are resistant to talking to police — leading to dead ends for investigations and the pervasiveness of the feeling that things can’t get better.

We still believe that significant improvement on preventing these crimes hinges on changing that. But until that changes, we are grateful that our police are open to both what has worked and to new ideas.
