Ceremony’s message of recognition necessary

Our editorial this weekend noted the values and virtues espoused at our region’s recent commencement ceremonies — but another recent ceremony deserves the public’s attention and appreciation as well.

Our region’s chapter of the Blue Star Mothers of America hosted a ceremony, featured in the June 4 edition of the Sun-Gazette, to recognize high school graduates enlisting in America’s armed services.

We are thankful for the efforts of the North Central PA Chapter of Blue Star Mothers of America in hosting this event. Too often in our nation’s history, the willingness of men and women to bear these burdens has been taken for granted, without the appropriate sense of gratitude for our veterans’ selfless service.

“Tonight is about recognizing the courage, commitment and selflessness of these young men and women as they begin this important journey,” Chapter Secretary Carol Coombs told the audience at the ceremony.

Courage, commitment and selflessness are cherished values in our communities — and the young men and women honored that night certainly deserve the recognition for practicing these values in service to our nation.

We hope as they pursue their military careers, our communities can find ways of expressing their appreciation and gratitude for their service — and for the service of all the men and women willing to make the sacrifices that the military requires.

Starting at $3.90/week.
