250th Fourth of July a good time to reflect on hard work

Our 250th Independence Day will soon be here.

The Williamsport Sun-Gazette is honored to commemorate this occasion with a special edition, reflecting on the history of our communities and of our nation.

As we wrote and edited the special edition, which will be included in Friday’s edition, we ourselves reflected on our history.

One note or detail of our region’s history that stuck with us in the role work and industry have played in the successes of our communities.

From agriculture to the logging industry, our region was built by men and women working hard — primarily to provide for their families, but also to turn this wilderness into boroughs and cities and neighborhoods and homes.

We fear sometimes that the crucial necessity of labor is neglected or downplayed.

But for 250 years, the prosperity and vitality of our communities has depended first and foremost on men and women willing to work hard, to house and feed our young nation, to improve upon what their predecessors accomplished and to ensure the trajectory of progress that has led our nation to overcome its imperfections and to strive to be a better place — to be a place where the inherent freedom and opportunity owed to each and every man and woman is acknowledged.

It took work to get as close to there as we have. It will continue to take work to get closer to that ideal. And we hope as we all reflect on this Fourth of July, that we can appreciate the integral role hard work has played in our lives, our communities and, for 250 years, our nation.
