Time outdoors creates memories, develops appreciation

1 min read

We hope readers enjoyed our Outdoors section's recent article on the common snapping turtle -- we found it a reminder of how varied and interesting the wildlife of our beautiful state can be. From whitetail deer to fishers to porcupines and opossum, from eagles and grouse to, yes, the common snapping turtle, the nature that surrounds us is fascinating.

Species with distinct characteristics and distrinct roles in the natural ecosystem -- roles that better understanding fosters a greater appreciation for how our region's environment works.

We understand that people are busy. But time spent outdoors not only educates and informs families, it can provide cherished memories.

With summer underway, we truly hope, as we have often expressed in our editorials, that families are enjoying the richness of this nature. Our region offers blessings and opportunities to hike, bicycle, canoe, kayak and, in other words, explore the world in ways that many, more suburban or urban neighborhoods and communities can't. We believe all who are fortunate to live in our region should both appreciate and celebrate that fact.
