Bill limiting optical transceivers a sensible priority

2 min read

There are a lot of issues and policies that simply do not capture the public's imagination or interest.

They often remain important issues with potentially consequential impact on our nation's future. One such recent issue could have a profound impact on the very security of our nation.

We appreciate the efforts of U.S. Sen. Dave McCormick, R-Pittsburgh and U.S. Sen. John Fetterman, D-Braddock, to prevent the use of Chinese-made optical transceivers from being used in communications systems used in national security.

These optical transceivers are used to relay information by men and women serving our armed services and in interconnected agencies and offices -- with the possibility that transmitted information may ultimately be sensitive and pose risks of compromising Americans' safety and the country's security.

"We shouldn't rely on China for technologies that are essential to our national security," McCormick said, according to the report in the Monday edition of the Sun-Gazette.

We agree. And while the issue of preventing infiltration or compromising of our national security grid may not excite cable pundits the way other issues do, we believe it reflects sound judgement and an understanding of where our legislature's priorities should be on the parts of our state's two senators.
