Our region faces many of the same challenges as communities across our state and nation. Among the most heart-breaking of those challenges are poverty, food insecurity and homelessness.
We appreciate the work our lawmakers, state Sen. Gene Yaw, R-Loyalsock Township, state Rep. Jamie Flick, R-South Williamsport and state Rep. Joe Hamm, R-Hepburn Township put into securing about $6.5 million in funding for poverty relief.
As reported in Monday's edition, the money will be used by the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, Greater Lycoming Habitat for Humanity, STEP Inc., the American Rescue Workers and others to assist people in need of housing and food.
These organizations -- and all the organizations receiving this state funding -- have proven track records of helping those in our communities that need help. We believe they will continue to use their resources to alleviate the pain and fear of men, women and children experiencing homelessness and food insecurity.
The money -- which statewide totaled about $71 million -- comes from a tax-credit program that waives taxes in lieu of contributions to qualifying nonprofit organizations. Yaw is working with state Sen. Nick Miller, D-Allentown, to expand the program.
We hope their efforts are successful and that the state continues to be a good partner in helping our region's nonprofit organizations and volunteers address these vexing problems.
