Williamsport's Youth Council is planning its inaugural meeting in two days.
As the Sun-Gazette reported in Thursday's edition, the council will help young people in Williamsport practice civic engagement and interact with city leadership about the needs of the city's youth.
"This is the space where we're creating for them to speak for themselves about their own experiences, their challenges that they are facing," Loniqua Howell of Boy Mom Marathon, one of the organizations collaborating to create the Youth Council.
We hope this initiative is successful. We believe our community's future hinges in large part on young people being engaged participants of their city. We believe that a city that addresses issues confronting young people will improve the quality of life for people of all ages. We appreciate the hard work and time the organizers of the council have already invested and plan to continue investing in Williamsport.
Our city offers people of all ages many opportunities, along with a few problems. We believe the efforts of the Youth Council's organizers will help solve or at least relieve some of the problems Williamsport faces and will foster an environment in which even more opportunities can be created.
We are excited and hopeful about and appreciative of the Youth Council's efforts.
