In 2016, Hilary Clinton won the popular vote by a margin of 2,864,974 votes, but Donald Trump won the Electoral College by 77 votes, making him one of only five Presidents to assume the office without winning the popular vote, even as he falsely claimed he also won the popular vote. There was no flood of baseless lawsuits to overturn the election, no pressure on governors and attorneys general to throw out millions of legitimate votes, no threats made to election officials doing their jobs, nor hints of insurrection. There was just a mature, graceful acceptance of reality.
Fast forward to 2020 when Joe Biden wins the popular vote by a margin of 2,873,686 votes and the Electoral College by a margin of 74 votes. It is beyond my comprehension how the man now living in the White House can deny that reality as he encourages his base to repeat his delusional theories of electoral fraud.
This man who calls himself the "Law and Order President" has ignored the laws he doesn't like and attempted to change reality. In the process, he has encouraged his "tribe" to "Stand down and stand by," embraced armed White supremacists that the majority of Americans and the world see as the terrorists they are, and repeated his own version of "fake news" to sow the seeds of distrust of our institutions and add a spark to the chaos he so loves.
It is mind-boggling to me that so many elected Republicans have willingly sacrificed their party, their integrity, their reputations, and their credibility to enable this bully's self-serving agenda. They could have, years ago, made him face the consequences of his irresponsible actions; instead, they turned a blind eye, putting their short-term need for power ahead of the best interests of the country. History will not judge them kindly.
