This is a question almost all readers can vividly recall and answer.A little over 20 years ago, on Sept. 11, 2001, 2,996 Americans lost their lives due to a group of savages who decided they didn't think we deserved the right to live. Ukraine pledged to support the U.S. and passed resolutions through their government to help us in whatever capacity they could.
Today, only a few decades after our darkest hours, America stands idly by, while the lives of many more Ukrainians hang in the balance. Like us, a mad man and his henchmen decided that they didn't deserve to live prosperous, democratic lives.
In the early days of December, 1994 the Budapest Memorandum was signed. In doing so, Ukraine gave up their nuclear weapons in turn for protection from the U.S. Today, we let an ally, who we had an obligation to, face an aggressor with many more magnitudes of strength. Ukraine has reached out and asked some 28 countries for aid in defense, and in my opinion the requests have fallen on deaf ears.We could all learn a lot about freedom, courage, integrity and leadership that we've forgotten, from watching the people of Ukraine stand up in the face of real oppression. And let me tell you something,the lack of these qualities isn't just in our current administration and others around the world, it is the lack of these qualities in ourselves.
How far we've strayed. It's a sad day to be an American.
