Thank you for your logical editorial in the Aug. 16 edition, "Recent pitch for gun control relies on faulty data." Democratic state legislators called for a requirement honest citizens secure a law enforcement permit before they are allowed to buy a gun. You correctly pointed out such legislation violates both the U.S. and state Constitutions and the recent Supreme Court decision overturning New York's similar citizen gun rights restrictions. How many criminals would ever seek such a police permit for a gun?
In my opinion, Democratic anti-gun rights legislators all have a common theme:
1. They do not know existing gun control laws.
2. They do not know how rarely existing gun control laws are enforced.
3. They call for laws only honest gun owners will obey. What data do they have that shows criminals will comply with their proposed legislation? Has any gun control prevented anything?
Thank you for quoting gun rights authority John R. Lott. Thanks for being fair and balanced on gun rights. If anti-gun people wish to dispute your editorial, I am sure you will do well in rebuttal. If I can assist, I will gladly do so as a retired federal lawman. I never arrested an armed criminal with a police gun permit!
