Salladasburg is saved

2 min read

That's right - at the April 24 meeting the Jersey Shore Area School Board voted for reconfiguration Scenario C. This keeps Salladasburg Elementary School open, equalizes class sizes across all elementary schools by shifting boundary lines, and saves the district money by reducing the same number of faculty positions as the proposed closure. If you live in this community, you know this was by far the most popular scenario. The vote was decided with a 6 to 3 majority. It's important to know which board members voted to close Salladasburg (Scenario A): Jessie Edwards, Wayne Kinley, and Michelle Stemler. Ironically, some of these folks campaigned on the very premise of keeping all our elementary schools open.

Now that Salladasburg has been spared the hatchet once again, it is important to know who to vote for in the upcoming primary election on May 16. Because everyone knows that our community wants to keep our schools open, candidates rarely openly share their school-closing views prior to the election or remain silent on the issue all together. Therefore, it is very important that all constituents within the Jersey Shore Area School District know exactly where candidates stand on important issues such as school reconfiguration.

Despite the recent positive vote, our community schools are not entirely safe from future closure discussions. For that reason, I want to be very clear about my positions because I am running for school board in Region 1 (Avis Borough, Salladasburg Borough, Anthony, Brown, Cummings, McHenry, Mifflin, Pine Creek I, and Watson Townships). Current board member, Nancy Petrosky, is also running in this "vote for 2" region. Together, we are committed to a fiscally conservative, business minded approach in keeping our schools open and our district competitive in the education marketplace, and avoid the losses associated with school closures. Let's move our district forward in a positive and productive manner for taxpayers and children alike!
