We are thankful we had an opportunity recently -- in the Wednesday edition of the Sun-Gazette -- to share the important work the Big Brothers Big Sisters does for our communities.
We believe everyone should be thankful these volunteers are willing to commit the time and effort to supporting children who face unique challenges and obstacles and to helping those children rise above such situations.
"I always felt like God put me in her life when I needed her and she needed me," one volunteer for the organization told the Sun-Gazette.
The time spent with the youngsters, as one told a Sun-Gazette reporter, can be instrumental in encouraging them to make good life choices and to take their education and future seriously.
These are important lessons -- lessons reaching children that may face disadvantages their peers don't face in our unfortunately unfair world. Lessons that come with the credibility of an adult who is willing to surrender the time necessary to play a role in the child's life.
That compassion and guidance are a worthwhile endeavor that deserves all of our appreciation.
