Trump has said that Putin, "Can do whatever the hell he wants" to NATO countries that don't spend 2% of their GDP on defense. Well, NATO isn't an apartment building and member nations aren't tenants who can be evicted if they are behind on their rent.
Rather, NATO is the single most effective organization the world has seen when it comes to keeping Russian dictators contained. For 75 years, only NATO has kept the Soviet Union/Russia from expanding into Europe. It is also the reason China has not been more aggressive with Taiwan.
Trump's landlord mentality when thinking of NATO only weakens the effectiveness of that organization. And that only encourages dictators like Xi and Putin to expand their control over their neighbors.
