Trump, like all class clowns, craves attention. Giving such individuals attention in a way that rewards their actions, only makes them more likely to continue acting out. As an elementary school teacher, I knew to take these kids seriously, but not in a way that encouraged their actions.
Trump will be the leader of the most powerful nation on earth so he has to be taken very seriously. Countries he threatens (Canada, Mexico, Panama, Denmark, etc) should prepare themselves accordingly. But, making a big public fuss about his childish threats will only encourage him. Instead, publicly describing his comments as merely "interesting" would deprive him of the impact he is looking for. That would be a good way to deal with him.
