Twenty-two states and two cities have sued to stop Trump's order blocking birthright citizenship. It seems that right out of the gate, Trump is testing his limits. Now, this could just be a diversion to focus the media on this issue while he gets other things done without resistance. A third scenario would be that this is intended as a test to see who is loyal to him. Maybe it's all three! This apparent blunder may be a calculated move.
I think that the Supreme Court will eventually rule against this order. Consider that this is his Supreme Court, who he installed during his first term. We are in for a wild ride!
I think that Mr. Trump offers some good ideas and could make some positive changes to the country. After all, the America that existed at the time of the peaceful transfer of power, is already in a long and bumpy decline. The Long Decline option may indeed be preferable to the Quick Revolution option for a number of reasons. However the end result of both could be the same – a ruined civilization.
At this point, we pretty much know about Trump, and it certainly seems that the constitutional separations will be sorely tested. This could be the most significant constitutional crisis since the Civil War. The Republic survived that crisis, but it took the rise of one of the greatest presidents, and a bitter war to preserve the Union. The civil war provides instruction about the Revolution Option.
On the other hand, I suppose that the decline and fall of many empires of history provides instruction about the Long Bumpy Decline option that we are already experiencing. Historically, Long Declines can include revolutions and wars too. So maybe we are in for all of the above. The decline of our second favorite empire, the Roman one, included several reform-minded emperors, who altered the trajectory, but ultimately failed to restore the glory of the Empire.
If you can be dispassionate like a historian, this is going to be a fascinating time in history. If you are more likely to be passionate, then Giddy Up!
