The fact that the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) needs to ask federal employees at Lewisburg and Allenwood penitentiaries what they do tells us all we need to know - DOGE has no idea. Worse, they don't care.
DOGE isn't just trimming fat from the government workforce--it's "putting it in the woodchipper," as multi-billionaire Elon Musk said when he took the hatchet to USAID. Musk and his team have indiscriminately fired hundreds of thousands of federal employees with little regard for them, their families, or what they do.
DOGE has fired thousands of law enforcement personnel - FBI agents, DOJ investigators, Homeland Security staff, and even those overseeing our nuclear arsenal. And it also has cut thousands of public safety employees like researchers fighting Avian flu and Ebola, scientists developing vaccines or fighting cancer, and meteorologists tracking hurricanes.
The real point of Musk's email was to instill fear in federal workers. Russell Vought, the architect of Project 2025, said, "We want the bureaucrats to be traumatically affected. When they wake up in the morning, we want them to not want to go to work because they are increasingly viewed as the villains."
Tell that to the law enforcement personnel and other so-called "bureaucrats" - hard-working firefighters, health service providers, teachers, air traffic controllers, food inspectors, and other government employees in large and small towns across America.
Federal workers in central Pennsylvania don't need to justify their work. The unelected, secretive DOGE needs to justify its ignorance -- and its existence.
