Ill-informed speakers

2 min read

The story about a Williamsport meeting really missed the mark. It promoted the use of automated enforcement cameras for traffic violations. There will soon be a state legislative bill to ban all forms of automated enforcement. Better talk to the prime sponsor. It was also said there would be a speed camera pilot in Centre County. That is totally wrong, as the assembly never enacted a law for this. Talked about yes, did not happen. Then we have municipal radar, which nobody ever wants to enact.

What the meeting never brought up is why traffic engineering in the state does not comply with federal and state regulations? For example, why are speed limits not posted at the 85th percentile, as required?

It is sad that the speakers were so ill-informed about the issues. They did not use independent sources. If you only listen to people inside the revenue stream or who hate cars, you get bad information.

Spotlight PA recently ran a story that looked at cameras, and Jay Beeber was quoted. Beeber ripped apart the cameras, as he also did at a state hearing in 2023. Beeber has real data to back him up. Did the city talk to him? Does not look like it.
