On April 4, 2025, President Trump posted on his social media platform:
"This is a great time to get rich, richer than ever before!!!"
This made me wonder who will get rich. Farmers, whose costs for fertilizer and equipment will shoot up? Home builders, who must pay higher costs for lumber? Coffee shop owners, whose imported beans will cost more? No. Everyday working folks aren't going to get rich.
I think the billionaire pals will get rich. Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, among others, are poised to get huge contracts, paid for by taxpayers, to privatize services. (U.S. Postal Service no more, perhaps; there's Amazon!)
Who else will get rich? Probably our Senator McCormick, a millionaire who ran an investment company and sees opportunity in a crashing stock market, who has supported every reckless move by Trump including the tariff wars. People like McCormick, and all the others, cannot imagine worrying about paying a mortgage or rent when they own several homes. They cannot imagine worrying that retirement savings earned over a lifetime have just been wiped out.
Maybe the question is who will pay? All of us will pay economic costs, with higher prices for everything, with poorer government services, with fewer job opportunities, with loss of medical care. At what cost will the rich get richer?
