Goodbye, Hiawatha

When I moved to Williamsport in 2005, one of the first community-based activities I did was to ride the Hiawatha Riverboat. After that initial ride, I was hooked. As someone that has always loved the water and boats, this was a perfect way to spend a summer evening. The following year I soon found myself attending wing nights and other specialty cruises with friends. When out-of-town family came to visit, I was always sure to take them on the Hiawatha. At that time, it was a cost-friendly way to give my guests a taste of our unique community.

Unfortunately, those days are gone. Over the past few years, the daily-cruise cost has climbed to the point of unaffordable for many families. This year, for a family of four (two adults, two kids, child rate is 3-12 yrs.) the cost to step onto the boat for a one-hour ride is $50! Fifty bucks to take a one-hour ride up and down the Susquehanna River. Keep in mind this does not take into account concessions that make the ride enjoyable. A family could easily spend $70-80 total. For some families, especially ones that swipe the plastic and don’t “feel” the money, it might not be a problem. However, for many others, the Hiawatha has priced itself out of summer plans. So, for now, good bye, Hiawatha.
