Harvard’s ‘billions-for-trillions’ trade-off

2 min read

The medical breakthroughs achieved by Harvard Medical School have been documented by the Economic Impact Analysis Report on Medical Innovations from the National Bureau of Economic Research and the NIH Funding Data Overview of the National Institutes of Health. These studies also compared the estimated monetary benefit of these discoveries to the cost of Federal grants to Harvard. Here are a few examples of Harvard's medical research achievements:

In the early 1920s, researchers at Harvard Medical School played a crucial role in discovering and developing insulin therapy for diabetes. Insulin transformed the disease from a fatal condition into a manageable one, ultimately saving countless lives.

Harvard researchers played a key role in developing vaccines for diseases like polio and hepatitis B. Dr. Albert Sabin's work on the oral polio vaccine contributed to the near eradication of polio globally.

Harvard's Dana-Farber Cancer Institute Researchers have pinpointed crucial genetic mutations linked to various cancers and created targeted therapies that enhance survival rates for many patients.

Harvard contributed to the Human Genome Project by mapping human genes. This achievement improved our understanding of genetic disorders and pioneered the first steps in personalized medicine.

A local columnist recently questioned the usefulness of Federal grants to Harvard and concluded that "The Trump approach to Harvard is largely justified." The "Art of the Deal Fella" has frozen Federal funding to Harvard. The studies cited at the beginning of this letter have estimated that these research contributions alone were worth TRILLIONS of dollars in economic value and have saved countless lives. Federal funding to Harvard now amounts to two billion dollars a year.

So who would dare question the man we made President because he was an icon of a businessman— even though the following businesses went bankrupt under his ownership: Trump Taj Mahal, Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino, Trump Marina, Trump Hotels & Casino Resorts and Trump Entertainment Resorts.

Certainly not I.
