The letter in the May 30 edition of this paper gets it wrong when it says we have one political party. We have no effective parties at the national level. The Republican Party is not a political party; it is a rubber stamp for a narcissistic wanna-be-dictator who fancies himself king. They willing ceded their Constitutional responsibilities to "Advice and Consent" the president on nominations and to enact the laws and fund the programs and departments those laws create. Governing by "Executive Order"; overriding the voices and wishes of the citizens, has no place in a republic.
Meanwhile, the Democrats are ineffective, bemoaning the state of the country without presenting a coherent plan for a path forward to rescue the Constitution and rule of law that, ideally, treats everyone equally.
So, our elected officials are allowing a person who has no plans, only "concepts of plans," doesn't consider the real-life consequences of enacting his whims, enjoys creating chaos, abandoning allies, and ignoring court orders he promised to abide by to methodically dismantle our republic as he brings us closer and closer to fascism.
The Big Beautiful (Baffling) Bill was supposed to get the deficit under control and cut spending without hurting the most needy citizens. Instead, critical programs in education and health care, among others, are being slashed so tax cuts to benefit himself and his billionaire cronies can be extended, ensuring the 1% will control more money than 90% of the population. And the deficit he promised to get under control continues to balloon, leading us into default unless the cap is once more raised. Moody's Investor Service has finally joined S&P Global Ratings and Fitch Ratings in downgrading the US credit rating. Does the Senate have the backbone the House lacked to stop this travesty from being enacted?
The sad man in the Oval Office spends a lot of time trying to use the power of the presidency to punish his "enemies." His skin is so thin, if you look closely, you can see the ice water that runs through his veins. Even an event as solemn as the wreath-laying speech at Arlington on Memorial Day was not immune from the petty name calling and insults.
This administration will go down in history as the most corrupt as he and his family profit from "deals" with foreign governments. He accepts an airplane from Qatar, a gift to the Defense Department to replace the current Air Force One. It will take years and cost billions of taxpayer dollars to debug and retrofit this "gift" as a secure Air Force One. He'll be out of office before it passes muster and he admits it will go to his 'presidential library' when he leaves office, so it will never actually serve as Air Force One, even as that is the rationale for accepting the gift.
