There was a time
The Trump administration cut almost two billion dollars from NIH this year, gutting research in cancer, autoimmune diseases, diabetes, kidney disease and many others. They also cut thirty-one million dollars (twenty-six percent) from legitimate autism research.
You ask: “What is the benefit of these cuts?”
The administration has not provided any meaningful explication, although the rhetoric coming from those in charge, like RFK Jr. is clearly anti-science, and anti-medicine
Remember what’s at stake. Political ideology means very little to a patient with newly diagnosed leukemia, heart disease, or stroke. We instinctively run to the best place and people we can find.
Well, the current administration made it that much more difficult.
By the way, buried in the “Big Beautiful Bill” is an annual forty billion dollars in tax subsidies for the oil giants. You’d think they’d shell out even a measly two billion back to the NIH.
Common sense. Decency. Commonality. There was a time.
