The original lie
There is one lie Trump told that is bigger and far more damaging than any other and it’s not what you might think. Let’s go back to the early days of his second term. Straight out of the gate he demanded that the Gulf of Mexico be renamed the Gulf of America citing, and I quote, “Mexico has a small percentage. It talks about 8%. We have 92%…. It should be the Gulf of America.” He made this reference not once but three times.
Any fifth grader can look at the map of North America and tell you that it’s about 50/50, but in actuality Mexico’s share is slightly larger.
Anyway, tech firms like Google, Apple, Microsoft all lined up to immediately change the name to the Gulf of America. All Federal Agencies were required to change the name as well.
The problem, as I see it, is not in the name, nor in the fact that Trump lied repeatedly about something so obvious a lie. It is the point that despite some lackluster criticism from the press, we all caved– We The People, the guardians of our birthright of a constitutional republic built on law and legitimacy of our sacred institutions.
Everyone noticed. Still we caved.
Trump noticed. And from that simple trick, that nimble slight-of-hand, he knew a lie would triumph over truth.
And so, it continues. The lie has garnered tremendous strength, truth withers on the vine, and Congress, Corporate America, and Fat Cat billionaires applaud.
It’s night in America.
