Mayors are elected to work for their constituents. Reporters are paid to expose mayors when they don't.
Another article reporting on the "condemned" City Hall. That word "condemned" brings visions of dilapidation, decay. It is never mentioned that the police still use this building to hold all their records and evidence, that the police work out in this building.
Reports on the $50,000 annual cost of keeping City Hall. Never a report on the cost of the mayor and all the departments renting space in other buildings, while they own a building- City Hall.
Reports on the water leaks without a mention of the fact that they were preventable. The gutters should have been maintained. The heat should have been turned on that cold winter when the pipes burst.
Nary a report on what was done with the insurance money after these damages were sustained. Is it because no insurance claim was ever filed? Someone didn't do their jobs.
Repeated articles written stating there was mold in the building. The report said there was no significant mold in the building. Read the report. Do your job.
A little research into comparable property values in Williamsport would tell you that City Hall is worth much more than a paltry $500,000. How does it benefit the citizens to give away their assets? Someone's not doing their jobs.
Ask the hard questions.
Ask the mayor what he did with the $24 million in Covid funds. He claimed that the money could not be used for City Hall repairs. How is it that other cities used the money to repair their historic buildings?
Read the report that City Council paid for last year. It says that City Hall is fundamentally sound- that the renovations that were attempted in the 80's are failing. Why? Because we can't build like our forefathers built. Anything we construct today will be useless in 50 years.
Do your job, Sun Gazette.
Ask the Mayor hard questions, like: Did you attempt to get funding to fix City Hall? What steps have you taken to restore the building? Why did you abandon City Hall when there was no mold? Why did you not make an insurance claim? Where do you plan to house yourself and all the departments? At what cost? When?
