How much is the soul of a nation worth? Say we are talking about America.
I've often thought you can estimate its value by the cost of the Civil War in lives lost: approximately seven hundred thousand, with hundreds of thousands wounded.
All that death and misery to save us from existential ruin and to extinguish slavery. Or, ladies and gentlemen, to save our soul.
Abraham Lincoln considered the cost in his second inaugural address–
"…until every drop of blood drawn by the lash shall be paid by another drawn by the sword"
Great words from a great leader in a time of national peril.
How about now, in our moment of peril?
Well, as it turns out, Donald Trump just set a current market value at 1.3 trillion dollars for our soul. That is, to multiply the number of voters by the offer of five thousand dollars per vote.
One point three trillion to close our eyes to all the lies, deceits, and buffoonery coming from the Oval Office. And it's borrowed money to boot! From ourselves!
I would have thought the soul of America would be worth much, much more.
Let me ask you all something. Where is the outrage?
This is no joke. This is a judgement upon us. An insult! Far beyond any obscenity we've experienced from this administration so far.
