Vote the person, not party

2 min read

Many years ago, I was a registered Republican, but became an independent voter when the party started trending in a different direction. Even then, I voted the person, not the party. When speaking to a friend not long ago, though, I realized that I had not voted for a single Republican in ten years, which got me to thinking about the reason.

We have some conscientious and well-intentioned Republicans around our area, but the problem is that those politicians, even down to the very local level, must obey Trump without question, or be primaried by him. For most politicians, there is nothing more terrifying than being voted out of office, and so they always, every time, bend the knee to Trump's dictates, whether that vote or policy is good for America or not.

One recent example is US Senator from PA and Connecticut Dave McCormick, who voted for the confirmation of Trump's personal attorney , Todd Blanche, the most obviously corrupt Attorney General in American history. Now, Senator McCormick had to be well aware of the fact that Todd Blanche has no intention of keeping his oath of office, but is simply Trump's hand puppet. When it came time for the confirmation vote, it didn't matter. McCormick toed the party line, that is, Trump's line.

Sadly, these days a vote for a Republican, no matter what they may say or intend, is a vote for his corruption, his contempt for the Constitution and the rule of law, and his steady but sure dismantling of our country and our democracy. I can't in good conscience support even our local Republicans for office. A vote for any Republican, no matter how minor the office, is a vote for Trump, and the ongoing death of America.
