Gun violence

The following is a reply I sent to Senator McCormick regarding gun violence. It seems appropriate given the loss of life that occurred in Shreveport this past Sunday. Senator McCormick, I thank you for responding to my email regarding gun violence. This past Spring, the residents of Millville in Northumberland County experienced an unspeakable tragedy. A seventeen-year-old male shot and killed another seventeen-year-old male living in the same house. I don’t believe there is much disagreement among most Americans that we are past the time to address this issue. In your ...

No kings

We now have an official king — the mayor of Williamsport Pennsylvania. No independence celebration after 250 years. I want it on May primary ballot for a vote — the king does not rule here! FRANCIS KELLEY Williamsport Submitted by Virtual Newsroom

Welding glasses

Another letter to the editor recently bringing up God, Satan, Trump, and Socialism. Do these people ever wonder if they are worshiping the RIGHT God? They really think a just God would be on the side of Trump. And just what do they know about Socialism? Let me give them an example: Years ago in Vietnam, along the road to China Beach near Da Nang there were many welding shops. These shops were Capitalist American shops where welding was done by street kids for very little pay. These 10-year-old boys did NOT get welding glasses because those glasses cost MONEY! When a kid lost his ...

Two thumbs down

Not falling for all the hype to rush to see to see One Battle After Another, I picked it up in DVD form at the local library. It received 6 Oscars. That’s rarefied air. Only a dozen or so movies over the past century have gotten that many Oscars. I’m glad I didn’t pay to see it. I have to scratch my head in wonder at how this movie ever garnered so much hardware, or any at all. My only conclusion is that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the organization that hands out the golden statues, is dominated by left wingers who seek to support movies that follow the ...

Religious freedom

As the semiquincentennial of our Nation approaches, I have been paying more attention to what people think America is or stands for. For example, letters of opinion published herein have claimed the original U.S. Constitutional Republic was formed as a Christian Nation to be governed by Christian principles. I attended a series of four lectures by Christopher Pearl Ph.D. associate professor of history at Lycoming College on the American Revolution. This was a deep dive into the sentiments and events leading to the independence of the colonies along with local history and lore which ...

Crack down on grooming

Often referenced in today’s headlines but still widely misunderstood, “grooming” describes the behaviors used by child predators to build trust and normalize inappropriate interactions, often disguising exploitation as affection or mentorship. These behaviors most commonly occur when an adult holds a position of authority over a child, such as a teacher, clergy member, or youth group leader. Grooming gradually desensitizes children through boundary testing conversations, physical contact, or inappropriate emotional dependence. Yet in Pennsylvania, there is no statute that ...
